Sacred Journeys Network

Established in 2014, the Sacred Journeys Network welcomes pilgrimage scholars and practitioners from all walks of life to its annual conference as well as to local and online events celebrating one of humankind's most ancient practices.. Pilgrimage is associated with a great variety of religious and spiritual traditions, beliefs, and sacred geographies. As a truly global phenomenon, pilgrimage facilitates interaction among diverse peoples from countless cultures, and occupations. In our gatherings, we explore the concept of travel for transformation, for growth, and for becoming. We welcome conversations that help explain journeys through lenses that respect the sacred as understood within any given community or tradition. No one academic discipline controls our conversations and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of sacred journeys enrich us all.

Throughout the years, we’ve maintained an emphasis on the personal experience of pilgrimage and its power of transformation. We’ve facilitated the publication of many books and special issues of journals, and our network members are making outstanding advances in the field.

We gather at our annual conference to celebrate the timeless tradition of pilgrimage.

We gather to share the experience of our own pilgrimages, across all frontiers.

We gather to speak of faith or our search for meaning.

We gather to encourage the academic study of pilgrimage.

We gather to promote camaraderie or, as they say on the Camino, communitas. The common human experience of life’s journey.

We gather to understand the role of pilgrimage in addressing the great challenges of our time, including the environment, human rights, conflict, and so on.

We gather because we enjoy it. For many of us, there's nowhere else we’d rather be.
